BOAST IN THE LORD

It is the nature of some people to boast—about their education, their possessions, their status in life, ad nauseam: “For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy” (2 Timothy 3:2). This is a good way for others to turn the other way when they see such a one coming toward them.

BOAST IN THE LORD

To the church at Corinth, Greece, the apostle Paul wrote in his second letter:

But, “Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.” For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends (2 Corinthians 10:17-18).

The Bible is its own best commentary. What does it mean to boast in the Lord? The weeping prophet Jeremiah explains what it means to “boast in the Lord!” He declares, “But let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows me, that I am the LORD, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,” declares the LORD” (Jeremiah 9:24 NIV). To “boast in the Lord” then is to know the nature of the true God. To declare to the world that God exercises and delights in kindness, justice and righteousness!

BOAST IN THE CROSS

To all who are Christians our text in 2 Corinthians 10:17-18 relates to us because our boasting is in our Lord Jesus Christ:

“But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world” (Galatians 6:14).

Let us make our boasts in the name of Christ Jesus, for there is no other name under heaven by which men may be saved. He is the ONLY way to God. Christ is Jacob’s ladder that reaches up to heaven (John 1:51). “BOAST IN THE LORD!”
